Real Estate Agent vs. REALTOR®: What’s the Difference (and Why It Matters)?

Not all real estate agents are REALTORS® and that difference actually matters when you’re buying or selling a home.

A licensed real estate salesperson (real estate agent) has passed the state exam and is legally allowed to help clients buy, sell, and lease property. That’s the minimum requirement to work in real estate.

A REALTOR® is a licensed agent who is also a member of the National Association of Realtors. REALTORS® agree to follow a strict Code of Ethics, which means they’re held to higher standards for honesty, transparency, confidentiality, and putting their client’s best interest first.

Here’s the simple breakdown:

• All REALTORS® are licensed real estate agents

• Not all licensed real estate agents are REALTORS®
