Valentine’s Day in Laguna Beach: A Go-With-the-Flow Date Night Story

by Gerson Seise REALTOR

Valentine’s Day in Laguna Beach hits different. It’s romantic in that old-school, postcard kind of way. Ocean breeze, twinkle lights, couples everywhere pretending they’re not checking wait times on their phones. This year was my first Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend, and we went into it with a very “go with the flow” mindset. No reservations, no strict plan, just vibes. In theory, that sounds cute and carefree. In reality? On Valentine’s Day night in Laguna Beach, that’s bold.

I actually kicked off Valentine’s Day with lunch at The Lumberyard on Forest Avenue with my mom and honestly, that part of the day deserves its own spotlight. We walked in and sat at the bar (even though there were tables available) and ordered right away. Their lunch menu is fantastic and always hits when you want something filling but still fresh. We went the classic route: a Caesar salad and a Cobb salad (plus martinis), all around $19-ish. Big portions, great flavor, zero regrets and the drinks are always solid.

Spending part of Valentine’s Day with my mom was really special. As an only child, those moments hit different, especially as life gets busier and schedules don’t magically line up the way they used to. It wasn’t sappy or over-the-top, just one of those easy, meaningful meals where you’re laughing and catching up. It meant a lot! Sometimes the most low-key plans end up being the ones you remember most.

It felt like one of those simple, perfect Laguna Beach afternoons that remind you why certain spots stay favorites for years. The Lumberyard is one of those reliable Laguna Beach restaurants that never lets you down. It’s one of the biggest restaurants in Laguna Beach, and both the tables and the bar are great if you actually want to sit and enjoy your food in a lively atmosphere. Their tin fish menu is one of my favorite underrated things there. Simple concept, done really well! Plus their happy hour is one of the better ones in Laguna Beach. It’s the kind of place you go back to again and again because it just works.

Now to the night festivities in town. My boyfriend and I weren’t even sure if we were going to go out at first, so we figured we’d just wander and see what happened. Our first stop was Piatti, the newer Italian restaurant on Ocean Avenue in Laguna Beach. We lucked out and snagged seats at the bar, which honestly felt like winning the lottery that night. We ordered an appetizer and a couple of martinis because, well, priorities. The dirty martini? Solid. No complaints. Blue cheese olives? Elite. The espresso martini? Tragically bad. But hey you win some, you sip some regrets. We’re definitely going back so we can actually enjoy the dining room.

Feeling optimistic (and maybe a little delusional on my part), I thought we could turn the night into a mini Italian restaurant crawl in Laguna Beach. Cute idea, right? Yeah… no. Every other Italian restaurant we tried was not taking walk-ins. The town was on absolute fire. We technically could’ve gone into Hennessey’s Tavern, but Valentine’s Day at Hennessey’s in Laguna Beach just didn’t feel like the moment. It’s fun, it’s chaotic, but it’s not exactly “romantic first Valentine’s together” energy.

Then there was Brussels Bistro, which had a brief lull and possibly could’ve fit us. I love that place, one of my favorite Laguna Beach restaurants, but my boyfriend hasn’t been there yet. We want his first time to be relaxed, special, and actually enjoyable, not rushed because we were squeezing in wherever we could.

We ended up at the Marine Room Tavern, and honestly, that saved the night. We grabbed the very last two seats at the end of the bar, and it felt like fate. We stayed for a few hours just talking, people-watching, and soaking in the energy of Valentine’s Day in Laguna Beach. By the time we left, the place was standing-room only. I’ve never seen Laguna Beach this busy outside of Hospitality Night. Every restaurant in Laguna Beach was packed, lines were everywhere, and the whole town felt alive in that slightly chaotic, buzzing way.

The only place we saw consistently taking walk-ins in Laguna Beach was Alessa by Chef Pirozzi on Forest Avenue and even that line was wild. The restaurant itself was still completely full. It was one of those nights where you could tell everyone had the same idea: “Let’s go out, it’ll be fun,” and Laguna Beach said, “Cool, see you in line.”

All in all, it was a really great Valentine’s Day in Laguna Beach. Was it perfectly planned? Not even close. Would reservations have made life easier? Absolutely. But there was something kind of charming about just bouncing around Laguna Beach together, taking it as it came, and ending up somewhere cozy where we could actually talk and enjoy each other’s company.

What I loved most was seeing Laguna Beach so alive, couples dressed up, friends out laughing, restaurants buzzing, the whole town showing off. It reminded me why I love living here. Even on the busiest nights in Laguna Beach, there’s something magical about the energy, the ocean air, and the way the town comes together. It was really nice to experience all of that on my own terms, with someone special, even if our “go with the flow” plan turned into a full-on crowd adventure.
